The build philosophy
When we created the Wheelhouse Max Perkins road bike build, we set out to deliver the best value possible. Instead of hitting a pricepoint or some other external cue, we equipped the bike with everything we’d spec if we were building a bike for ourselves. Which, of course, we were – we November folks ride and race on dead to the letter Max Perkins builds.
For the HOT BUNS Original Recipe, we took exactly the same approach, filtered for cross.
We went with SRAM Rival for the meat of the build. True, it’s a few grams heavier than Force but it’s also a good bit cheaper to buy and replace. In a sport where rear derailleurs get chewed up like Clif Bars, this is a GOOD THING. There are, however, some places where going with a little bit extra is well worth it. We think the (quite significant) cost of Avid’s Shorty Ultimate brakes is well justified by their superior performance, adjustability, durability, and versatility. A bike needs tires, and a cross bike for racing might as well come with the ones that everyone uses anyway. Challenge Grifos and Fangos are as good as it gets, in your choice of tubular or clincher*. Rival cranks don’t come in a BB30 version, but fortunately SRAM’s excellent S900 carbon cranks do. S900s are the basis for SRAM’s Quarq cranks. The CX versions are 110BCD with 36/46 gearing. A lot of builds cheap out on the cassette and chain, but cross is the wrong place to do that. You’re going to be carrying the bike after all, and extra weight matters. The tenacity to stand up to repeated thrashings and dousings in mud and cleanings with a pressure washer is good for your cassette and chain to have. The cockpit is Ritchey WCS and we spec an excellent Thomson post. And of course we dress it with our outstanding FSW wheels, in your choice of tubular or clincher.
The HOT BUNS Original Recipe is ready to win from the minute you put it together (please allow the glue on your tubulars enough time to dry, mkaythanks?).
*additional charge for tubulars. perfection costs.
